Building Muscle the Raw Way!

I came across this article today and wanted to share it with you. I was just having a conversation with one of my girlfriends last night about this very subject. I was trying to explain that animal proteins are not very usable to our bodies and when cooked, protein is actually decreased even further. So, this is just part of the article, but it makes a few very good points. Sometimes I think it's good to hear this stuff from someone else besides me! Enjoy!

Building Muscles On A Raw Vegan Diet – Really?
by Charlie Abel
Can you really build muscle by lifting weights on a raw vegan diet? That's the second most frequent question I'm asked. The answer is, "there's no reason why you can't lift weights and build muscle on a raw vegan diet, and there are many benefits in doing so."
On a raw vegan diet, your muscles are still there, of course. You use them every day to walk, run and lift things. You can increase their size and strength if you know how.
It seems people assume that in the absence of consuming milk, meat or eggs, protein must be lacking, and that isn't true at all. This assumption indicates that the questioner is uninformed about nutrition, but you won't get anywhere telling them that!
When we eat a raw vegan diet we can avoid the negative effects of cooking food. In their complexity, protein molecules are known as "macromolecules" which are damaged when heated. Their chemical structure changes, making them less usable by the body; they become less digestible in proportion to the amount of heat used in cooking. So, if your friend thinks that you're not getting any protein because you won't eat a steak, you could tell him that you adopted the raw vegan diet to get more protein, since the heat of cooking makes it less usable. As your friend eats his steak, you might ask him where he gets his protein!
Since fruits make up a large portion of a proper raw vegan diet, it's also good to know that the protein content of ripe fresh fruits (and vegetables) is actually in the simple form of amino acids, which are much easier to digest than the larger macro protein molecules in meat and dairy products. Thus, a raw vegan diet really does supply adequate protein for building muscles. It will not cause the health problems animal proteins do; and it is easy to digest, allowing your body to conserve energy from digestion and instead use that energy to recover from your demanding muscle building workouts.
What exactly makes muscles grow? Hard work! You have to get out of your comfort zone. The harder you work the muscles, the bigger and stronger they will grow.
We have to do this properly, and the key word is "gradual." You incrementally build up to hard work according to your ability.
If you've never strength trained before, merely exercising your muscles with relatively easy resistance exercise is harder work than you're used to, and will induce your muscles to grow. Some of them, anyway. And this may be enough for some people, but if you want bigger muscles, then you need to make the exercises harder.
To make the exercise harder, you increase the amount of weight (resistance) used for your exercises. This fatigues your muscles down to a low point, and this stimulates your body to go ahead and build bigger muscles. As you grow stronger, this becomes tougher and tougher to do because you will find that on a raw vegan diet, your body will adapt very quickly. This may be the result of the increased availability of protein, through avoidance of heat cooking.
Starting out, I'd recommend a full body workout, on three non-consecutive days of the week, such as Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Start with light, easy weights, and increase the resistance gradually.

Zucchini pasta dish.

Add caption

Blend a small amount of rosemary, one garlic clove, about 1-2 inches of oregano (or substitute fresh), and S&P in a food processor. Add two tomatoes last and blend again.  Be careful not to over blend.

Spiralize one zucchini and enjoy!
My son was sitting on the counter helping me make the zucchini. See his little red shorts in the pic below?! I love it when he helps:) I was shocked when he reached out and grabbed the left over core of zucchini that was left over and ate it raw. I also had no real intention of giving him any of this for dinner, but he wanted a "bite pease mama," so of course I happily obliged! He liked it enough that he probably had about 5-6 bites!

Sale!

Good morning everyone!  I had to post this right away. The Raw Food World is having a HUGE "at cost" sale on the Sunwarrior raw vegan protein powder that I have blogged about. With each 2.2lb bag that you order you get a free 500g bag with it. If you buy one bag it's almost $40 and if you buy the 3 pack, you also get a free 500g bag and it comes out to be $38 per bag. I figured that out with shipping includes on the 3 pack. So, if you're interested in ordering, it's a good time.

Hungry For Change REMINDER!

A few posts ago, I blogged about the upcoming "Food Matters" documentary, "Hungry For Change." It's finally here, and you can watch it for free until March 31st.

If you're fat, wonder why you can't ever lose weight, sick, depressed, and addicted to food, caffeine, and (DIET) soda, you MUST watch this video! If that's a little too blunt for your taste, I don't apologize:) I love it when people can honestly feel good from the inside out. Our bodies are incredibly amazing machines and if we treat them right, they are good to us in return. If you've never truly been healthy, then you don't know what you're missing. Just imagine if you could wake up everyday feeling great and love the person that you are. Or wouldn't it be even better if you didn't need to take any of those pills anymore? If you're a younger person and don't take pills yet, you are doing yourself a favor to start caring for your body now before it's too late. I can honestly tell you from my own personal experience as a registered nurse that the majority of people with diseases are obese, eat poorly, don't sleep enough, and don't exercise. Now of course maybe there's a few that sleep all the time and maybe take walks, but that means nothing if their diet is lacking! Processed foods are loaded with addicting chemicals that make you want more, so educate yourself and stop the dangerous cycle. For all of you out there reading this, I want for you to be able to enjoy your life and be healthy doing it!

One of the things that I hate to hear people say is, "XX disease is the leading cause of death among women today" or "XX disease is the leading cause of death among men." OK, so you get it right? Well, these XX diseases are not actually the leading cause of death. Processed food, sugar, and poor nutrition intake is actually the leading cause of death among all people. If we would just put good healthy foods into our body, XX disease would never get out of control in the first place. It's poor food choices that lead to XX disease and then to death.

If what you're doing isn't working, try something else. Another "diet" is not the answer, change your life. Start today!!!! All righty then! I'm going to step off my soap box and let you watch for yourself!! Use the link below to view "Hungry for Change" free. Enter your name and email address in the box at the top left corner of the screen and press, "watch now!"

Beet Juice

Fresh juice is one of the healthiest things you can make for yourself. It's also important to try and mix it up a little so your body gets a wider variety of nutrients. I used to juice beets all the time, but kind of got tired of them. I bought a bunch of them the other day and made this super yummy juice! It's a little sweeter to offset the earthy taste of the beets. I like Gabe to drink everything I make, so sweet is ok when it comes from fresh organic fruits!
 Here's what I used:
2 small beets
3 apples
2 oranges
You can adjust the amount based on what taste you prefer. I used the smallest screen possible to get very little pulp, but for some reason I still had to run the juice through a nut milk bag because it was still pretty pulpy. I don't mind it so much, but I didn't think Gabe would drink it with all of the pulp.

It was so good and so pretty too! I've always said I wish I had a lip stain made from beets:)

Keep it Simple!

Keep it Simple!

I wanted to post these two pictures just to show that raw food consumption doesn't have to be complicated! I had this veggie plate for dinner the other night. I had some red pepper hummus, which wasn't raw, but it's still healthy and better than many alternatives! There are plenty of recipes out there for raw hummus, but if you don't have time to make your own this is a great option. If you can see, I have raw asparagus on the plate, which is a new venture for me. I absolutely love asparagus, but didn't think I could do it raw. Well, I did and it's not too bad.

This is how I normally eat asparagus: Either steamed for about 4-5 min or placed in boiling water for about 3. It's stays crunchy this way and doesn't overcook it. I like it with fresh lemon juice, a touch of olive oil, and S&P. I eat large plates of it like this very often!!
This is a salad that I made with avocado, tomato, green pepper, asparagus, sunflower sprouts and pea shoots, mixed greens, s&p, and my favorite dressing: lemon and apple cider vinegar!

So, go eat something simple and raw!

A date over raw food!

A date over raw food! My kind of night, so that's what I did last week; went on a date to raw food night at The Green Owl Cafe. My husband was not my date, but he was all for it. In fact he sent me several text messages to see how it was going. How could I say no? Here's our text dialogue:

Eric:  I love you. Have fun on your date, he's a great guy.

Me: I know. I have an emotional connection to him, and he's gorgeous! I love you too!

Me: (later on) He has one fault: he picks his nose.

Eric: LOL (probably thought I deserved it for going on a date with another man)

Me: He's killing this raw food!

Eric: He's a little shorter than our used too, (Eric is 6'5'') but his tender heart makes up for it.

Me: :) Turns out he has more faults than I thought. He's a little OC! Fork and dirty hands everywhere, chews with his mouth open. Dude has no manners! I still love him though!

I love him because he's my son! Yep, I took Gabe out on a date with me for raw food! I ended up not having a free girlfriend, so I cancelled our babysitter (who's amazing by the way) and took Gabe. It was a fun night! Dirty hands and all!

Here's the run down of the menu.

Small Plates
Apple-fennel walnut napoleans--a stacked salad with agave vinaigrette
This was incredible! Gabe immediately wanted a bite and I was so focused on him that I forgot to take a picture until it was mostly gone. Bummer because it was really pretty too!

Spring Soup--a creamy zucchini soup with fresh herbs including parsley and cilantro.

Carrot-zucchini fritters--crispy vegetable patties with cranberry-ginger topping

Loved loved loved this soup! Plus I'm a huge fan of sunflower sprouts! (the green things on top of the soup) Gabe ate half of it himself and I contemplated ordering another bowl,  but I figured it would end up being too much after all of the other dishes. He kept saying, "more, more." That was probably his favorite. Well, beside dessert. He also ate a whole fritter. That actually surprised me a little because it had a chewy texture, but he ate the entire thing.
  Entree:
Raw Shepherd's pie with Colcannon topping--a savory mushroom-walnut and vegetable mixture topped with creamy cauliflower and cabbage, served with marinated green beans.
The main entree was also quite delicious. I've never been a huge fan of shepherd's pie, but this was really good. It had a chunkier texture so Gabe didn't get into much. I ordered him a vegetarian pizza that he thought was just great.

Dessert:
Grasshopper Pie--fresh mint cashew cheesecake with chocolatey crust and topping
I have to say, I wouldn't normally order grasshopper pie. This was AMAZING!!  I'm sure you can see the large spoon mark on the top. That was Gabe attempting to get the first bite. I had to practically beat him off so I could take a picture.
I also decided I should portion out appropriate bite sizes or he would've eaten the whole thing in one bite. He's got a sweet tooth like his daddy! At least this was raw and a much healthier dessert!
He was so proud of his little pizza in a take home box. He allowed me to carry "Thomas the train" so he could carry his pizza. When we got home he ran in the house, yelled for daddy, handed Eric the box of pizza, opened it up, and took a huge bite of what was left. I guess he was showing off or something. It was pretty cute and fantastic night for mommy!

Hungry for Change

It seems like I've been waiting forever to watch the new Food Matters documentary, "Hungry for Change."  It's still not available in it's entirety yet, but the trailer is very exciting. It has a great group of nutritional experts, including my very favorite, David Wolfe! I so desperately wish that people would be more willing to educate themselves on the topic of health and natural medicine. Statistics are showing that people are fatter, sicker, and more unhappy with their bodies every day. It's pretty sad when I'm more shocked to hear that patients I see are on no medications rather than on multiple medications. It's becoming the norm, and that is scary to me. So, stop dieting and make a lifestyle change!

Education is key, so watch the trailer! I can only hope it will excite and motivate you as much as it does me!
