The Benefits of Juicing!

Okay, so as promised, here are some healthy reasons why I highly recommend buying a juicer!

The process of juicing removes the fiber from the juice. Although fiber is good for us, it prevents digestion and nutrient absorption. Removing the fiber makes the juice very concentrated and highly bioavailable. Juices retain digestive enzymes that would normally have gone to breaking down tough plant fiber. These enzymes can now go to breaking down old food and debris that sits in the intestinal tract.

Juicing helps reduce food cravings. Circle of life put it perfectly:

When your cells and organs become malnourished from eating devitalized and non nutritional foods, your body constantly sends signals to your digestive system, causing an overproduction of digestive juices. If your digestive system is congested with old hard-to-digest food debris, the digestive juices become attuned to not what your body needs but what is sitting in your digestive system.

Digestive action creates a taste and inclination to eat, not what your body needs, but what’s sitting in your digestive system. Lingering food is more than likely the residue of refined and processed foods -- white flour, white sugar and hydrogenated fats (natural vital food does not linger in your digestive tract). Hence, you crave white flour, white sugar and hydrogenated fats because this is what your digestive juices are focused on digesting.

Juicing lessens cravings by addressing and correcting malnutrition, as well as aiding the body’s digestion of old food debris.

There's no heating involved. This is beneficial because it spares the healthy enzymes that cooking can take away. It's important to consider a juicer that doesn't heat as it juices. Lower RPM's are better. Check out lower RPM juicers here. Also, a good juicer will produce less foam, a sign of oxidation which lowers antioxidants in the juice. Less foam equals more antioxidant benefits:)

Detoxing in and of itself from juicing is especially beneficial. You can detox fats, preservatives, chemicals, and other toxins that other poor food choices have left behind. This allows the body the ability to access and utilize restorative and sustaining nutrients.

Juicing provides the most digestible and absorbable form of food. It provides nutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that the body can use to repair itself. It helps boost the immune system and helps with cell regeneration and growth.

Not only do you get a larger variety of vegetables with juicing than you normally would, but you also get the benefits of eating more of the healthy parts of the fruits and vegetables. There are vital nutrients found in the the skin, seeds, and pits of fruits and vegetables.  The type of juicer you have will determine what parts you can place in your juicer. You can also add variety like beets, garlic,  lemons, ginger, etc that you may not normally eat large amounts of. This allows you to have a bigger variety and more balanced nutrition. Let's not forget that you can pick any combination of fruits of veggies that you feel in the mood for or that you need to help clear up a specific problem.

Juicing helps you lose weight too. In addition to helping you form healthy eating habits, you also feel better and have more energy to be active. Since juicing provides you with the nutrients your cells need, unhealthy food cravings are reduced.

Last, but not least: Increased energy due to the quick absorption into the bloodstream!! Can you say that your coffee or soda does any of the above things for you? I didn't think so!

Oh wait, I just thought of another reason: It tastes delicious!!

Here's some information about different kinds of juicers that might be helpful.

To see a very detailed chart of juicer comparisons, click here. Don't forget to click on page 2 once you get there. This is where I bought my dehydrator and juicer. I found them to have the lowest prices, and depending on which model you buy, you can get free shipping.

Types of Juicers From Food Matters Website

There are many types of juicers available, with accordingly variable quality and price. A cheaper juicer may be an appropriate start for beginners and certainly preferable to not juicing if other models are unaffordable. However, a premium cold-press juicer will produce a superior-quality juice and allow you to extract more from your fruit and vegetables, saving expense in the long-term.

Centrifugal Juicers

Centrifugal juicers are commonly available in retail outlets and are the cheapest to purchase. These machines initially extract juice by pulverizing fruit and vegetables against a round cutting blade that spins very quickly against a metal strainer. The centrifugal force generated by this cutting apparatus separates the juice from the pulp, which drains away separately from the fibrous remnants.

Advantages

  • Generates large quantities of juice before pulp accumulates for removal
  • Cheaper
  • Easy to use
  • May reduce food preparation time, as many will accept larger fruit and vegetable pieces

Disadvantages

  • Noisy
  • Yields less juice
  • Destroys enzymes more easily by introducing heat and oxygen
  • Extracts nutrients less efficiently
  • Not well-suited to juicing greens

Cold Press Juicers

These superior machines operate via a mastication (chewing) or cold-press method. In contrast to the rough extraction of centrifugal juicers, mastication or cold-press juicers compress fruit and vegetables to ‘squeeze’ out their juice. Whilst more costly, their slower and more thorough extraction rates produce a high-quality juice – and more of it.

Advantages

  • Quieter
  • Lower heat and oxidation, thereby protecting nutrients and enzymes
  • Well-suited to juicing greens and sprouts
  • Yields more juice
  • Juice preserved in better condition for longer
  • Less foam
  • Often able to serve other food processing functions, such as making nut butters, pasta and ice cream

Disadvantages

  • Heavier
  • More expensive
  • Longer food preparation, as smaller food pieces are required for their narrow chutes

Manual Juicers

Like cold press juicers, manual juicers provide a slow and gentle extraction that preserves the nutritional integrity of juices. However, there are several features to consider before purchasing a manual juicer:

Advantages

  • Quiet
  • Operate without electricity
  • Produce a high-quality, high-yield, nutritious juice
  • Easy to clean

Disadvantages

  • Slow
  • Require some physical exertion
  • May rust if iron-based
  • Often limited to certain types of fruit and vegetables

Welcome home!

I am SO super excited to introduce you to the newest member of our family! Yep, this beautiful twin gear Green Star Elite!

I have been wanting to add this little gadget to our kitchen for a very long time. I did lots of research and this is the one I decided on. It's easy to clean, yields alot more juice than most juicers, and doesn't heat and kill the enzymes like some do. It does quite a bit, but I've only used it for juicing so far!
As you can imagine, I used it the very night in came to live with us! My first juice experiment was greens. My old juicer didn't juice greens well at all, so I have been missing out on all of those healthy nutrients! My husband and son were pretty psyched about it too.
My husband has been great about making me juices almost every day if I don't get to it first. He's so sweet!
Our most popular juice around here is carrot/apple. My hubby watched a documentary on the Gerson Theory, and that is the blend they use 8 times a day! It's a very controversial approach to cancer treatment in case you aren't aware of it! I'm quite supportive of the idea!
Our local Coop has 5 and 20 pound bags of carrots!
And huge bags of juicing apples too! All organic!
I have a built in helper now that begs to make juice multiple times a day! He gets fresh juice everyday and I'm so happy he likes it!

And there's very little pulp left and lots of juice! I guess I forgot to take a picture of our juice!!

It seems like there are lots of parts, but it seems easier to clean than our last one. It's actually quite easy!

More Immune Boosting Juice

Today, I chose to post some information on immune boosting foods from Joy McCarther. It's that time of year that we start to get colds, so this is perfect time to start juicing for immunity!

Immune Boosting Juice

By Joy McCarther

Several years ago I invested about eighty dollars and bought myself aWaring Pro stainless steel (looks pretty on my counter) Juice Extractor. And let me tell you, I've gotten my money's worth.

Now I know you might be thinking that juicers are the type of kitchen appliance that one gets excited about only to have it collect dust year after year. If that scenario sounds familiar, then read on, because I'm about to inspire you to dust off that juicer and make yourself an immune-boosting juice that will have your cells singing with joy.

If you often visit juice bars in your city, then you know a good juice with a shot ofwheatgrass or any other fancy ingredient can cost as much as a meal. However, if you are feeling under the weather, no cost is too great. When I feel a cold coming on, I immediately make myself a juice and feel instantly better. I swear by it.

Here are my top five immune-boosting ingredients to add to your juice, whether you make it yourself or buy it at a restaurant. And my two top ingredients for any juice are usually always beets and apples, which I use as a base -- gotta love thoseantioxidants.

1&2. Apples and Oranges: It's no secret that fruit is a source of vitamin C. But did you know that vitamin C boosts the production of infection-fighting white blood cells and antibodies, thanks to its ability to increase levels of "interferon," the antibody that coats cell surfaces to prevent the entry of viruses? Make sure you use the white stringy bits on your orange, as they are high in phytochemicals that fight cancer, and have anti-viral properties, too.

Recipe after the jump...

3. Beets: Another root vegetable that is a must for any immune-boosting drink as it's also a potent liver detoxifier. Beets add a sweet flavour because of their natural sugar content, as well as a source of calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, phosphorous and immune-enhancing zinc.

4. Garlic:
Not only does garlic ward off vampires, but the "stink" in garlic called allicin is anti-fungal, anti-microbial and anti-cancer, all of which translate to immunity-boosting. Garlic also works by increasing the production of enzymes that rid the body of carcinogens BEFORE they cause a cell to mutate.

5. Ginger: This root vegetable is one that is worth an entire blog post! Not only does it add a little kick to your juice, but it is incredible for your immune system. Compounds in ginger inhibit proliferation of cancer cells -- specifically, leukemia, skin, kidney, lung and pancreatic cells. It can be used as an antibiotic because it kills many different kinds of bacteria.

Immune Boosting Juice
If you don't have a juicer, then check out your local juice bar and ask for a juice with these ingredients.

Ingredients:
2 medium-sized beets
1-2 apples
2 garlic cloves
1/2 tbsp of freshly shaved ginger (NOT from a jar, likely to contain sugar, aspartame or even MSG)
1 orange

Place all the ingredients in the juicer for a few minutes. The final product will be a really rich red colour, thanks to the beets. Just make sure you eat some parsley for fresh breath if you plan on getting close to anyone after drinking this.

Flu Fighter and Immune System Booster.

My son and I went to visit my parents this past weekend. We had a great time, but I didn't get much sleep. He slept in the room next to mine, and I heard him coughing ALL night. On Saturday, he coughed all day too and had a horribly runny nose. As soon as we got home on Saturday afternoon I made some fresh immune boosting juice right away. I used the first recipe below. It had a bit of a bite to it, so I added an extra apple and 5 strawberries to his to sweeten it up a little more. I'm guessing this will be a regular drink around here this fall and winter!

Flu Fighter and Immune System Booster

2 cloves of garlic

Juice the garlic first. Next juice the celery and parsley together. To juice the parsley, tuck the stems and the leaves into the groove of the celery sticks. Finish juicing with the carrots and apples

The Immune System Juice Booster

This juice is great for building and maintaining the immune system.

3 carrots chopped into ¼" pieces
1 stalk of celery chopped into ¼" pieces

Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead.

Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead is a documentary that Eric found on Netflix the other day. It's about an Australian who decides to take his poor health in his own hands and cure himself by juicing. Very interesting documentary. My hubby is not a fan of this whole raw food stuff. He's a bit picky to say the least:) (I love you babe!) Anyway, it motivated him to start juicing more, which makes me an incredibly happy woman! He even stopped the show in the middle so we could come up to the kitchen and make some fresh juice.

It happens to be a great time of year for us to be juicing so much, because I have quite a few veggies in my garden that I could never eat alone. Juicing takes alot more, so nothing goes to waste!

Someday I'm going to invest in a new juicer:) I've had this juicer for about 10 years I think! Yikes! It still works, just doesn't do leafy greens the best.
I know it can be hard to get your kids to eat veggies too, but I'm pretty sure they will love fresh raw juice. I love it for my son because he still can't chew alot of healthy greens that I would like him to eat. Run it through the juicer and they get all of the healthy benefits! Just make sure to drink it right away when it's nice and fresh!
It seems like I put a different combo of veggies in the juicer everyday. Some taste better than others, but I love the variety. My son absolutely loves to help push veggies down the little shoot! Add a lemon, lime, or fresh ginger for a nice little zing to your juice:)

Morning green juice.

I was trying to come up with something easy, healthy, and green this morning. I used my juicer, but you could throw this stuff into a food processor as well for a little added fiber!

1 bunch of romaine (heart healthy and a good source of fiber, especially in a food processor)
1/2 cucumber (good for the skin, hydration, and a good fiber source)
1 generous handful of bean sprouts (anti-aging, cardiovascular health, stress, energy, it's a long list!)
1 whole apple (makes the juice actually taste good) (good fiber source, helps regulate blood sugar)
a squeeze of lime if you want (anti-oxidant, anti-cancer)

As you can see it was pretty tasty!
